His inner faith revealed itself further when his elder brother David gave him a copy of the Qur’an. It provided the key to the answers he had been looking for: “It was the timeless nature of the message,” he said, “the words all seemed strangely familiar yet so unlike anything I had ever read before.”
Privately, Stevens started applying Islam’s spiritual values to his own life: he began praying directly to God and gradually cut down drinking, clubs and parties.
He retreated from the music business and finally embraced Islam in 1977, changing his name to Yusuf Islam.

A Child’s Thought
When I was a little foetus,
Angels used to meet me
In my little womb,
just beneath my mother’s heart
Their wings of colour lit up the dark
Oh Lord, I loved hearing them sing
Praises to the True King of everywhere,
And everything!
When I got a little bigger, I exercised
Mummy had to suffer with my little dance
‘Fore I knew it I was ready up for my entrance
My birthday came and time was right
Now my long night was almost over
Wow! It’s bright!
Then the gift of seeing my Mother,
Smiling eyes of love looking down to me
I was very tiny then, you see
Now I’ve drunk a river of milk
From a source like silken glass, but soft
Thank you, God, for everything!
I can’t wait till I see you again..
